Tree Preservation Workshop and Annual Meeting

Understanding Impacts to Trees During Construction

Presented by Joe Hansen

In urban and suburban development, trees are frequently compromised or lost due to construction activities - often because their needs are not fully understood during the design and planning phases. Conversely, those seeking to advocate for and protect trees also do not fully understand construction and engineering concepts, principles, standards and limitations involved in construction. This workshop will explore how common construction practices affect trees and how informed site development planning can help identify and mitigate those impacts.

This workshop will provide insight on basic construction principles that often affect trees during construction. This will aid in the identification of constraints and limitations to both tree preservation and site development. Topics covered will include excavations for different project types, utilities, and site development plans.

We will go further in depth and provide insight on how to read building and engineering plans, discuss potential mitigation options associated with proposed plans, and explore how to effectively communicate concerns or requests to property owners, clients, architects, civil engineers, and builders.

Workshop will be followed by lunch and TWAC Annual Meeting.
